Many offices are carpeted, and with so many employees and clients coming in and out of the office each day, it’s easy for dirt to pile up. A stained carpet is not only unpleasant to look at, but it can also cause moisture damage to your floors! If someone spills something on your office carpet, it’s important to have the stain cleaned as soon as possible to prevent it from setting and causing more permanent damage. Here are some tips and tricks for cleaning common office crept stains as soon as they happen.

Coffee Stains

If the coffee is always flowing at your office, you can expect a spill or two. Luckily, coffee stains on your carpet are pretty easy to treat if you clean them right away. Start by dabbing the affected area with a clean, dry cloth. Be careful not to press too hard—the goal is to soak up as much liquid as possible without rubbing it into the carpet fibres. Once you soak up as much excess liquid as possible, add 1/4 cup of dishwashing liquid to warm water. Put that solution on a clean cloth and dab it on the stain. Then, dab the spot dry with your dry cloth. Alternate between wet cloth and dry cloth until the stain dissipates.

Pen Ink Stains

Leaky pens can be messy, but they won’t do any permanent damage if properly taken care of. Treating ink stains in your carpet is similar to treating coffee stains: begin with a dry cloth, dabbing out excess liquid while taking care not to rub the ink into the carpet fibres. Then, add 1 cup of vinegar to 1 cup of lukewarm water, soak a clean cloth in the mixture and use it to dab out the stain. Dry the stain with your dry cloth. Repeat this process until the stain disappears.

Gum Stains

Gum stains, while less likely to occur at the office, are more difficult to manage. If a lose piece of gum ends up on your office carpet, fill a small baggy with ice cubes and rub the ice over the gum until it freezes. Then, use a dull knife or the edge of a spoon to scrape the gum away. Once that is done, dap the spot underneath with a cloth dampened in a solution of dishwashing liquid and warm water.
